Cynthia Colen, The Ohio State University

Colen is an Associate Professor and vice-chair for the Department of Sociology at The Ohio State University. Colen is a social demographer who earned her MPH and PhD at the University of Michigan. Broadly defined, Colen’s research investigates linkages between racial and ethnic inequalities, social mobility trajectories, and health outcomes in the United States. She also focuses on rural/urban patterning of morbidity and mortality, as well as the role of kinship networks as sources of resiliency among marginalized populations. Her most recent research investigates the health effects of discrimination and other forms of unfair treatment, particularly among middle-class African Americans. Colen leads OPEN’s Understanding Reproductive Health Needs of Appalachian Communities project.
