Bessett is Professor of Sociology at the University of Cincinnati, where she is also an affiliate of the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department and the Medical Scientist Training Program. She earned her MA and PhD from New York University and held the Charlotte Ellertson Social Science Postdoctoral Fellowship at Ibis Reproductive Health. Her research centers on the sociology of reproduction, including patient experiences of reproductive processes, disparities in access to care, and knowledge about reproductive health. Bessett is the co-principal investigator of the OPEN project and leads the Patients’ Experiences of Abortion project. She also contributes to three additional OPEN research projects: Abortion Clinic Closures and Vulnerabilities; Patterns in Abortion Use in Ohio and Surrounding States; and Ohio’s Safety Net Family Planning Providers.
